Spring AC Maintenance Checklist for NC Homeowners

A freshly cleaned AC condenser coil
A clean condenser coil sheds heat efficiently — a core part of a spring tune-up.

Carolina summers don't ease in — they arrive. A little spring prep now keeps your AC ready before the first 90-degree day.

Replace or check your air filter

Start here. A clean filter is the cheapest way to protect efficiency and airflow. Swap a 1-inch filter and check thicker media filters.

Clear around the outdoor unit

Trim back plants and clear leaves and debris within about two feet of the condenser so it can breathe. Gently rinse the fins if they look dirty.

Test your thermostat

Switch to COOL and make sure it responds. Fresh batteries and a quick schedule check now save a mid-summer headache — see our thermostat settings guide.

Check the condensate drain

A clogged drain line causes water leaks and can shut the system down on a hot day. Make sure it’s clear.

Listen and feel

Run the system briefly. Weak airflow, warm air, odd noises, or short-cycling are early warning signs — better to catch them now than in July.

Book a professional tune-up

The big one: a professional spring tune-up checks refrigerant, electrical components, and safety controls a homeowner can’t — the best way to prevent a breakdown. Our maintenance plans include it twice a year.
