Not sure whether to repair or replace? These seven signs usually mean a new system will save you money.
1. It's 10–15+ years old
Most AC systems last about 12–15 years in our climate. Past that, efficiency drops and breakdowns climb.
2. Repairs are adding up
If a repair costs more than a third of a new system — or you've called more than once a season — replacement is usually the smarter spend.
3. Your energy bills keep rising
An aging or undersized system runs longer to do the same job. A modern SEER2 unit can noticeably cut summer cooling costs.
4. It uses R-22 (Freon)
R-22 has been phased out and is expensive when available. A leak in an R-22 system is often the tipping point.
5. Some rooms never get comfortable
Hot upstairs, cold downstairs, or rooms that never cool point to a system that no longer matches your home.
6. It's noisy or constantly cycling
Loud operation and short-cycling signal worn or mismatched components.
7. Humidity problems
If your home feels muggy even when the AC runs, the system may be oversized or worn out.
