How to Reduce Humidity in Your Home

A meter showing high indoor humidity at a comfortable temperature
68% humidity at 70°F still feels clammy — moisture, not temperature, is the issue.

In our humid summers, comfort is about moisture as much as temperature. If your home feels sticky even at a 'cool' setting, here's why.

Why it feels worse than the thermostat says

High humidity makes 72°F feel like 78°F. Your AC removes moisture as it cools, but if the air still feels damp, the system may be struggling — or oversized.

The oversizing trap

A common cause: an oversized AC cools the air fast and shuts off before it pulls enough moisture out — leaving you cold and clammy. Right-sizing (a Manual J calculation) on replacement fixes this.

Keep up with maintenance

A dirty coil or low refrigerant hurts dehumidification. A tune-up keeps your system removing moisture the way it should.

Add a whole-home dehumidifier

For homes that stay humid, a whole-home dehumidifier works with your HVAC to hold indoor humidity in the comfortable 40–50%25 range — great for comfort, health, and protecting floors and furniture.

Watch for warning signs

Foggy windows, musty smells, or damp walls mean excess moisture that can lead to mold. If you’re seeing those, let us assess your system and options. See indoor air quality.
