The first cold night is the worst time to find out your heat won't start. A quick fall checklist keeps winter comfortable.
A fresh filter helps your furnace or heat pump run efficiently and safely all winter.
Turn the heat on before you need it. A faint burning smell on first startup (dust burning off) is normal; persistent odors are not — shut it off and call.
Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked by furniture or rugs for even, efficient heating.
This is the one not to skip. A fall tune-up includes carbon-monoxide and heat-exchanger checks plus a full inspection of ignition and controls. For gas systems especially, safety matters as much as comfort.
