Fall Heating Checklist: Get Your System Ready for Winter

A gas furnace and flue piping in a home
Heating systems need a safety check of the flue and heat exchanger before winter.

The first cold night is the worst time to find out your heat won't start. A quick fall checklist keeps winter comfortable.

Swap the filter

A fresh filter helps your furnace or heat pump run efficiently and safely all winter.

Test the heat early

Turn the heat on before you need it. A faint burning smell on first startup (dust burning off) is normal; persistent odors are not — shut it off and call.

Check vents and returns

Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked by furniture or rugs for even, efficient heating.

Mind heat-pump setbacks

Heat pump owners: avoid big thermostat setbacks — they can trigger expensive backup heat. See our thermostat guide.

Get a safety-focused tune-up

This is the one not to skip. A fall tune-up includes carbon-monoxide and heat-exchanger checks plus a full inspection of ignition and controls. For gas systems especially, safety matters as much as comfort.
