AC Not Cooling? 6 Things to Check Before You Call

An evaporator coil frozen solid from restricted airflow or low refrigerant
A frozen coil is a common reason an AC blows warm air — shut it off and let it thaw.

Before you book a repair, a few quick checks can sometimes get your air conditioner cooling again — or at least help us help you faster.

1. Check the thermostat

Make sure it's set to COOL and the temperature is below the room temp. Try fresh batteries.

2. Check the air filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow and can freeze the coil. Swap it if it looks dirty and let a frozen system thaw before restarting.

3. Check your breakers

HVAC systems often use two breakers (indoor and outdoor). A tripped breaker is a common, easy fix.

4. Look at the outdoor unit

Clear leaves and debris, and make sure the fan is spinning. Ice on the lines means you should shut it off and call.

5. Check vents and registers

Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked by furniture or rugs.

6. Check the condensate drain

A full drain pan or clogged line can trip a safety switch and shut the system down.
